Gipsy Kings have been active for decades since their formation in 1978. The Reyes and Baliardo families formed the core of the group, which achieved worldwide success with classics such as “Bamboleo”, “Djobi Djoba” and “Volare”. With their infectious mix of traditional gypsy rumba, flamenco and accessible pop, they grew into an international phenomenon.

In 2026, there are effectively two versions of the group, a formation around Nicolas Reyes and the version led by Tonino Baliardo, to which this album relates. Reyes remains for many the voice of the major hits, while Baliardo is responsible for the characteristic guitar playing that makes the Gipsy Kings’ sound so recognisable.

Four years after “Renaissance” in 2022, “Historia” now appears, the second album under the name Gipsy Kings feat. Tonino Baliardo. The album feels like a celebration of the group’s rich past and at the same time pays tribute to the musical and familial roots of the band.

From the opener “Señorita” it immediately becomes clear where the strength of this album lies. The typical rumba flamenca, with multiple guitars weaving rhythm and melody into one another, instantly evokes memories of the glory days of the late eighties. This also immediately captures the soul of “Historia”, a warm, lively and nostalgic album that remains faithful to the familiar sound.

Yet “Historia” is not solely about celebration and recognition. The instrumental “Cielo” forms a melancholic resting point on the album and is a tribute to Paco, the late brother of Baliardo and a former member of the original line-up. The guitars here are given more space for emotion and atmosphere than for rhythmic exuberance.

After that comes “Soñador”, which, through Baliardo’s virtuosic guitar playing, evokes an almost Santana-like atmosphere. With “Hijos Del Viento” the album shifts again towards the identity and spirituality of gypsy life, while “El Campo” brings a more cheerful and danceable rumba in which family, freedom and connection are central.

The closing track “Big Bang” rounds off the album in fitting style. According to tradition, the title was inspired by Baliardo’s young grandson, which further underlines the familial character of “Historia”. In doing so, the Gipsy Kings once again make clear what their music has been about for more than forty years: freedom, family, nature and the celebration of life. In a time of a polarised society, where differences are often emphasised and what we do not share is highlighted, it is refreshing to be reminded musically by Gipsy Kings feat. Tonino Baliardo of the important values over which we do have influence. (8/10) (V2 Records)
